Weather models are indicating the arrival of a strong cold front next weekend. Though it is still a week away, it looks as though our first freeze could occur Saturday night into early Sunday morning. If the air is chilly enough for an extended period of time, it could potentially end the growing season in the TV6 viewing area.
A freeze occurs when widespread temperatures are at, or just below the 32 degree mark. On average, Moline, Illinois will typically see a first freeze as early as September 20 or as late as October 29. Some plants will survive these types of conditions if they are properly protected.
A hard freeze occurs when widespread temperatures at or below 28 degrees are forecast. Statistics from the NWS show that on average, a hard freeze can occur in Moline as early as October 2 or as late as November 12. When a hard freeze occurs, the growing season typically comes to an end.
The GFS model hints at a hard freeze the morning of October 29 and the European points toward a slightly warmer solution and keeps the chilliest air over the Plains. As the days go by, the temperature forecast will be fine tuned. Check back frequently for updates!
