Jennifer Lopez Talks 'Marry Me', Working With Maluma, And More!

Jennifer Lopez stars in the upcoming Rom-Com movie 'Marry Me' in theaters on February 11th and stopped by Valentine in the Morning to talk about the movie, working with Maluma, performing at the Super Bowl, and more!

Jennifer is playing the character Kat, who is a Pop Superstar and talks about how she shares a connection with Kat since she understand the life of this character based off of what she's gone through over the years.

"I was able to bring things that I don't think any other person in the world can bring with understanding what it means to be a singer and an actress and having been through everything. There's also something about being in the public eye for such a long time. You have all these things happen to you and all these experiences and you kind of hold them very close. You don't let people in on what it's like behind behind the scenes...which is who you are a person when the cameras are not on and the things you really feel. That human human side, which is what I think we get a little more with social media, but not really. I think in this movie, I have to keep reminding myself because show business is so much about putting your best foot forward all the time. It's like my problems are not everybody else's problems. This movie gives you a little sense of those things."

This upcoming movie is Maluma's first featured film so she found herself giving him advice.

"I always feel like it's my job to make people feel comfortable and if I see anybody struggling or if I feel like I can help them in anyway, I definitely do that. This was his first movie so I think he was very open to like what do you think about this or do that or let's do this in the next take and he was very open to that. We had a great time and he was a real natural. You never know when you cast somebody in their first film, you hope. We met and we talked about the scenes and we rehearsed and stuff, but you never know on the day what they're gonna do or if they're gonna deliver, but he did."

The soundtrack for 'Marry Me' is Jennifer's first studio album in seven years and talks about connecting the movie and music together.

"It felt good because I haven't done an album in a while and it's funny I have my Producing partner and we always sit and talk about what would be the dream project or what new thing do we want to do, we've been doing this a long time. She was like it would be great to do a romantic comedy, which is like to me your super power and also doing your music and performing and how would we put those together. We got to do that for the first time ever with this project because I've never really done a musical so I've always wanted to do musical. This isn't quite a musical, but kind of like bringing those two together so that was a lot of fun and I haven't done an album in a while. I've released some singles both English and in Spanish, which I love and i'm always making music, but I haven't done a J. Lo album. This isn't a J. Lo album per se, this is a soundtrack to this movie. I play Kat and Maluma plays Bastian and we made music that we felt was right for those characters and for this movie. It's a little different than J. Lo and Maluma music, but it's beautiful I think and i'm really proud of it so it's somewhat of an album from me."

The Super Bowl is right around the corner and right before the world shut down in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, the last half time show was J. Lo and Shakira. Jennifer talks about how she mentally prepared to perform on the biggest stage in the world.

"I don't think there's any ever artist who has done the half time show and doesn't walk away thinking 'Oh My God that was so much pressure.' It really carries so much weight to know there's billions of people watching, you know that everybody in the industry is watching, you know that you're entering this kind of group of artists who are legendary that have done it before you, you want it to be the best obviously because you're competitive, and so there's all this pressure with it. There's also a lot of parameters like you have a certain amount of time, you have to build a stage and take it off, and all the creative. I build my shows from top to bottom as i'm sure most artists do so you're dealing with so many different aspects besides your performance. For me, walking onto the stage is all the preparation and I do prepare and I love to rehearse. By the time i'm walking to stage, it's kind of like very boxer walking into the ring. I've done all the training, I know this is what I do, and I'm going to fight to the death. It's this weird mix of adrenaline and super zen. Your confidence has to be so in tack in that moment so it's just this weird thing of like a Thoroughbred like let me out of these gates, but also like I know exactly what I need to do so there's this focus as well."

'Marry Me' is in theaters everywhere on February 11th and don't forget to stream 'On My Way (Marry Me).' Keep in touch with MYfm on Instagram/Twitter/Facebook!
